Bleaching for palamino tail?

I have been given a palamino who was badly neglected - starving, bad rain scald etc. We also think sometime he has been physically bashed because he is difficult to catch and jumpy. After some good food and a change of season his coat is a beautiful golden palamino with snow white mane and tail. However even after a wash the bottom of his tail is dark. The top of his tail is snow white, so it's probably stained from scouring or just being left dirty. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I could clean the staining with to bleach it back to white. Are there any commercial products available? How do palamino owners keep the tail clean? (I've had quite a few horses, but none with a light coloured tail!)Bleaching for palamino tail?
Don't bleach or peroxide it!!! Not only is it harsh on the hair it really doens't do a thing to take out the digniness (spelling?) I've has several palominos and all I do is wash the tail in white n brite shampo, let it %26quot;soak%26quot; into the tail for 10 minutes and rinse. It will tak several several washings and soakings to get the yellow out but it's worth it. After you get it out I suggest keeping the tail in a bag, especially in wet or muddy conditions. I keep my little mare's tail bagged during winter and if she is turned out during summer. It will still get a little yucky looking but I keep is washed so much with that white n brite that it's easier to clean than when i first got her. Basically love, patience and time is what cleans them and keeps them cleanBleaching for palamino tail?
I would suggest cutting it a few inches, that way you wont have to worry about chemically %26quot;bleaching%26quot; it and it will have a fresh cut, kept look. Sounds beautiful! Good job ! =]

BUT: if you want to NOT cut it try this whitener:

just wash and groom it regularly or trim itBleaching for palamino tail?
Go to Sallys Beauty Supply or any other salon supply store and ask them for purple shampoo for blondes. You can get big bottles for about $12. Shampoo it into the tail and leave for 10 mins, rinse and reapply. It will lift any yellow from a palomino including pee in the tail. If the tail is really bad, it might need a couple of washes but this is the best thing to use and is also good for socks and paints. Don't leave it on any longer than 10 mins or it can leave a purple hue. This is what we used for any light colored show horses including palominos.

There is a horse purple shampoo called Quic Silver but it's cheaper to buy the human stuff.Bleaching for palamino tail?
Bleach will just keep it yellow so you don't want to use that. I have heard a few times over the years that blue-ing works well for this. I never did try it my self.Bleaching for palamino tail?
You could trim the tail until the dark hairs are gone, or there are whitening shampoos for horses out there.Bleaching for palamino tail?
I'd just leave itBleaching for palamino tail?
Your best bet would be to trim the tail, but you will find that the darkening will come back. There are whitening shampoo's especialy for animals. baby powder works a treat, but doesn't last long. You could try bagging the tail whilst in the paddock or stable, but that's alot of hassle.

Just keep it trimmed is your best bet.

The palomino's you see in shows have there tails bagged %26amp; shampoo'd for weeks leading up to a big show, plus lot's of prep done on the day. I even know someone who uses white shoe polish to whiten tails on show day!!!

P.S keep up the good work with rehabilitating your horse, the more love %26amp; attention you give it, the more it will come to trust you.Bleaching for palamino tail?
From showing grey Arabs (white) I have used bluing, it is a laundry whitener, some people use it in swimming pools to give a blue tint-however if you wash the tail with tide detergent, rinse well then add 2 caps of bluing to a bucket of water and soak the tail, then let it set for about 10minutes on the tail and rinse again check for whiteness, if you need to do it again, rinse, condition, final rinse. It will sparkle! Use on white socks, manes as well. %26quot;Mrs. Stewarts bluing%26quot; Always dilute the bluing in the bucket of water, straight bluing will spot and be uneven.Be sure not to use tide with bleach! Bleach is bad. You can add bluing to a good shampoo and work it in and let it set for a couple hours and rinse, also put it in a leave in rinse and leave it overnight! However you use it, the tail will sparkle!Bleaching for palamino tail?
Yeah, you'll probably have to just cut off the end. It'll grow back.

Good luck!Bleaching for palamino tail?
Regular white vinegar is the best IMO. I got this trick from an old cowboy. My gelding's tail is all white, and I had spent so much $$ on whitening products over the years trying to get him show-ready. Now this is my secret weapon ;) Buy a gallon.

Wash the tail well with warm water and shampoo. Rinse.

Douse the stained tail in vinegar, and add some shampoo to make it stick. Work it in and let is soak for about 10 min. Rinse. Repeat or soak the tail in a bucket if needed. Voila!

Wear gloves if you have any cuts on your hands- it will sting. I don't use it on my horse's body just in case there are little cuts or scrapes, but I've been tempted...

The first time I did this the barn owner actually called my cell to ask how I got my horse's tail so white-she noticed it right away!Bleaching for palamino tail?
use bright whites!!!! it works great!! it should get that tail lookin like new!! it is for all live stock animals i use it on our show cattls and my horses white sock it works really great!!
